Smelly Shower Drain? Here Are 3 Reasons Why
Are you forced to hold your nose when you enter your bathroom? Does it smell like something unworldly is lurking beneath your shower drain?
Mold, mildew, clingy hair, and other factors could be the underlying causes of a smelly shower drain. Fortunately, the fix is often as easy as running water in the p-trap, removing a clog, or cleaning the drain components.
Read on to determine whether any of these causes might be behind your shower drain smell.
Three causes of a smelly shower drain
1. Your Drain’s P-Trap Is Dry
What exactly is a p-trap? A “p-trap” is a curvy section of the drainpipe that connects a fixture’s drain to the rest of your drain system. A p-trap gets its name because its shape closely resembles a “p” or “u” shape. Having a small amount of water in the p-trap is important because it blocks stinky sewer gases coming up through the drainpipe.
If you smell sewer gases or rotten eggs, your p-trap may be “dry” or not doing its job. If you don’t see water after removing the strainer and shining some light down your drain, something could be wrong with your p-trap. Run the faucet for a bit and see if the smell goes away once water is in the p-trap.
2. Clogged Drain or Stopper
Small things like hair, soap scum, and other debris get caught in the drain, which causes clogs over time. This clog then develops a smell when these items remain. Try using a drain snack or a plunger to remove the clog. If you have a really stubborn blockage, you may have to call a plumber for professional drain cleaning service.
3. Mold and Mildew
Mold and mildew are the usual culprits as it relates to smelly shower drains. Why? Because they thrive in dark wet places, which makes your shower drain a perfect resting place for odor. You should check both your stopper and drain cover to make sure they’re applied correctly. If either the stopper or drain is warped or doesn’t fit properly, it’s time for a replacement.
