When most people think of plumbing tools, they picture traditional items like a plunger, wrench, or maybe even a drain auger. Sure, these tools are still used and effective for many jobs – but we also have high-powered, high-tech tools up our sleeves. For dealing with tricky sewer line clogs, one of our favorite solutions is hydro jetting.
Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to break up blockages and clean sewer line pipes down to the interior wall. This advanced process can be used to unclog residential or commercial sewer lines or be part of sewer line maintenance to prevent blockages from forming.
Why clean the sewer line?
The sewer line is one of the most important yet frequently forgotten parts of your home’s plumbing system. Buried underground, the pipe carries all of the household’s wastewater (and anything else that goes down the drain) to the municipal sewer system.
Over time, several issues can occur to a sewer line.
- Substances such as fats, oils, grease, hair, food scraps, and other sediment can build up inside the pipe, slowly disrupting the flow
- Items such as wipes, hygienic products, and other solid objects can get clogged in the pipe
- Tree roots, attracted by the water and nutrients, grow into the pipes, creating a solid blockage
In fact, multiple or even all three of these scenarios can happen at the same time. When the sewer line is blocked, sewage can seep into the ground on your property – or worse, inside your home. That’s where hydro jetting cleaning comes to the rescue.
How does hydro jetting work?
You can think of hydro jetting as power washing for the inside of sewer pipes. The process uses a powerful machine attached to a thin hose with a specialized nozzle. The hose is inserted through the pipe and blasts water up to 4,000 PSI. This high-pressure stream is powerful enough to remove hardened debris and scour down to the interior wall – yet it is safe for most pipes.
Unlike traditional sewer line cleaning methods such as snaking or rodding, hydro jetting is effective for stubborn clogs and tree roots. The high-pressure water breaks up the blockage into small particles so they can pass through your sewer line and into the public sewage system for processing.
Is hydro jetting right for me?
Hydro jetting is effective for both residential and commercial sewer lines. The process can be used in emergencies where the pipe is already blocked, or you can be proactive and have your sewer line maintained to prevent a nasty, costly clog from happening in the first place.
Since hydro jetting using high-powered equipment and is a delicate process, it should only be performed by an experienced professional. A plumber can also determine if your sewer line is too brittle for the high-pressured water or if your pipe is broken, not clogged, that would require a different repair or replacement.
