Consider this … when you are finally ready to replace your favorite easy chair, most of us realize it’s not just about the look of it, or the feel of material .. it is most importantly about what is the right size for our build and stature. Our comfort is at the top of our criteria list, and, for this reason alone, the height of the toilet should be a huge factor in our purchase.

TOILET HEIGHTS

A standard size toilet is about 15-16 inches in height. It is considered the recommended size for “shorter” adults and younger family members.

A comfort height toilet ranges from 17-19 inches in height and adheres to the size used for ADA-compliant (American with Disabilities Act) toilets. This is the size you will find in newer homes and businesses.

If you are thinking about replacing your current toilet in one or more bathrooms, your first consideration should be that both of your feet will touch the ground. A trend is forming to purchase taller toilets, as we get older, so that it is easier to get up and off.

For home owners of a shorter stature that can be a mistake, if both feet do not easily reach the ground. For those people, we suggest you consider installing handrails or a pole to help lift yourself up as another solution.

Here is one way to decide what size is best for you. Grab a measuring tape. Now sit in a sturdy chair that seems to be the ideal height for you, such as one at the dining room table. Confirm that both of your feet are flat on the floor. Measure from the crease of your knee to the floor. That should be a good approximation on what toilet height will be comfortable for you.

If you are considering a taller toilet than the one you currently have in your home, here’s another measuring option. Find a couple of large books that will fit across the toilet seat. Once you have created the most comfortable height, by sitting on those books with both feet on the ground, take a measurement.

If you have a family member that uses a wheelchair, the best height for them is equal to the height of their wheelchair seat to aid in their ability to transfer from one seat to the other.
